TOKAJ PENDITS VINEYARDS

PENDITS– Sátorhegy - Abaújszántó

Muscat Blanc, Furmint

The renowned Pendits (first mentioned in 1609 as Pendicz) has always been one of the top vineyards on the volcanic Sátor Hill, according to the Tokaj-Hegyalja Album, published in1867. Its name is derived from the unique microclimate, coming from the Latin word 'pendus,' meaning slope.

Throughout history, it was primarily owned by noble families. In the 17th century, the vineyard was owned by the Alaghy family, followed by the Rákóczis. Later, alongside noble families, religious communities and smaller landowners also owned parts of it.

The vineyard is located on south-facing tuff terraces, consisting of layers of loess and rhyolite tuff. The 5,600 vines planted in 2002 (80% Muscat Blanc, 20% Furmint) yield excellent fruit for both dry and sweet wines.

Alsó-Bea: Located at the western foothills of Sátorhegy, its wines include dry Furmint and sweet Muscat Blanc. Felső-Bea: On the western side of Sátorhegy, its soil is volcanic loess containing rhyolite tuff layers. The Zéta, Kabar, Furmint and Hárslevelű grapes grown in this vineyard are vinified into both sweet and dry wines.

ALSÓ-BEA AND FELSŐ-BEA

Furmint, Hárslevelű, Zéta

The name Bea (Bellya) appears for the first time in 1721, when the area was owned by the Roman Catholic parish. After its first mention in 1471, later records refer to the land of Boldoganya (dedicated to the Virgin Mary) as one of the best-located estate vineyards of Abaújszántó.

In 1471, it was donated by the Szapolyai family to the Gönc Pauline Monastery.

At the beginning of the road leading to Sátorhegy, a statue of the Virgin Mary rises above the entrance of a cellar, marking the starting point of the Sátorhegy Calvary.

KASSAVÁROS – Sátorhegy - Abaújszántó

Kövérszőlő, Zéta, Furmint

The last descendant of the Szathmáry family, Archbishop and Cardinal György, donated a part of the family's land to the free royal city of Kassa (Košice) in 1522, with the condition that the income from the vineyard be used for ecclesiastical purposes.

Thus, Kassaváros (or Kassi) came into existence. The city of Kassa (Košice) owned this vineyard until 1920.

The vineyard's soil consists of volcanic loess and rhyolite tuff, with a southwest-facing slope. Its terraces retain heat well. The mixed forests surrounding the area provide protection from weather extremes. Most of the wines produced from here are exceptional dry Furmint varietals with distinct herbaceous aromas.

KRAKÓ – Kis Sátorhegy - Abaújszántó

Furmint, Kövérszőlő, Zéta, Góhér

The history of the vineyard is closely linked to noble families, with the land being owned by several aristocratic families over the centuries (including Szapolyai, Serédy and Alaghy until the 16th century). At the time of its first mention as Krakkó in 1686, it was part of the Rákóczi family estate. The wine made from the grapes grown in this site was sold to wine merchants in Krakow, and the name is derived from this. The road at the foot of the hill served as a trade route between Krakow and Tokaj.
